Who is Mr. X?
We'll be honest, we don't know! Unless they announce it on air (which they haven't) then won't know. There have been a number of guesses on our message board, but none have been confirmed as true. We did ask Laura, but she said she'll have to kill us if she told us...
The Transcripts
23rd September 1997
Laura couldn't get to sleep tonight as the people upstairs were 'at it again'. They were doing it for an hour, but it was making her miss Ben. He thinks it might be the guy with the girlfriend who looks like a slag. Three boys had moved in to the flat, and one of them (Dave) advised she moved out as he didn't think they'd get along. She'd moved the food out incase they nicked it and Charlie constantly walked in to the flat without knocking. The guy from Portugal seems to fancy her too, but she doesn't want to give him the wrong impression. She met some lesbians too in the laundry room, they started talking to Laura so she ran away. She's only been there a week, and she's missing Ben like mad. She tried to have some intimate phone calls but people were listening in. The entry ends with an optimistic message - 'this is crap'.
25th September 1997
Laura's head was hurting as she'd spent some time lying in the toilet and her sink was stinking as she couldn't make it to the toilet (she was sick). The couple upstairs were at it again and the lesbians had asked Laura out for a night. She'd had vodka jelly with the new people and nearly died trying to cross the road. She went to the pub, and ended up at 'Cheesy Pop' and was banned from the stage for harassing DJ Toast. A weird Portuguese guy turned up, smelling of garlic, trying to get his hands on Laura's hips. She tried calling Ben at 4 in the morning, but was banned from calling her so late and she has to 'matriculate' at university on Monday.
30th September 1997
Today Laura felt bad; she'd just got off with Alan (a flat mate). The boys had decided she wanted to get to know her a bit better, and started drinking and they put all the drinks in to a bucket. She couldn't come round to telling Ben. Dave said it was alright as it's a student sort of thing, but Laura says she managed to stop things before it got out of hand. She said she enjoyed it, and she was tempted to go back and see him. Alan apparently gave her what she needed at the time. All this just before she was supposed to be going back to York for Ben's birthday, but she thinks he won't find out. The lesbians weren't at the laundry today, and she'd left a sock in her whites so all her underwear was grey...
2nd October 1997
She had again got off with Alan. The worse thing about the whole situation was that she had only just got off the phone to Ben. She does not know if she fancies Alan or not and he may only be her plaything!
9th October 1997
Before today Laura had gone home to York from Uni in Glasgow and saw her boyfriend Ben who had a friend called Jenny who Laura didn’t get on with. Today she returned to Uni and Laura had her First drama study class with matt and for their first lesson they had to pretend to be dinosaurs, a tree and a utensil from kitchen. Laura also met friends for lunch they are trying to set Laura up with a mate of theirs and are going to go out to the south side of Glasgow together to try and hitch them both up. A couple from upstairs were annoying her with noise and she is thinking of writing into the Guinness Book of Records. Laura returned to Uni after seeing Ben, and she got a letter from him and unfortunately Jenny isn’t talking to him. She is also planning to go and see Alan again…
16th October 1997
"Dear Diary,
Just got in from uni. I was really wet by the time I got in so I just changed straight into my pyjamas. I had my first theatre seminar with a graduate assistant called Matt. You can tell all the girls fancy him but I think he loves himself. There’s some properly weird people in my English group too. Most of the look like they could do with a good wash. Matt said he wanted us to get rid of all our inhibitions, so we had to pretend to be dinosaurs, a tree in a particular season, and a utensil you’d find in a kitchen. It’s not really what I expected. Met Lisa and Lou for lunch. They kept going on about this friend of theirs who they’re trying to set me up with. We’re going out in Southside tomorrow with him and his mates. I’m not really bothered if she’s famous or not to be honest. My student loan just came in so I’m planning a big one. They just told me to turn my music down. I only had it that loud coz the noises started again upstairs. That couple are really beginning to gross me out. Maybe I should contact the Guinness Book of Records. It always makes me think about Ben. He wrote me a dead nice letter after I left and I got it today. He says that Jenny’s not talking to him, but his mum thinks I’m lovely and then it all got a bit fruity towards the end. I quite liked it and I cant stop thinking about it. I miss him. And I miss his touch. The boys have just got in so I might go and see Alan in a bit."
21st October 1997
Laura was back from Southside and when she got back she discovered sleazy Alan was waiting for her in kitchen because the fire alarm went off and Laura wasn’t there and Alan was worried and wanted to know where she had been. Laura decided to get her friends Dave and (another) Alan to get Alan to leave who drank huge quantities of milk. And if you were wondering what happened at Southside this is what happened unfortunately the team were not able to tell us who Laura hitched up with because he is a well known person so lets just call him “Mr X”. Laura and her friends Lisa and Lynnne had a good night with “Mr X“ he used to be in [blank] they seemed to get on really well and went to the shed (which is a like bar place) Laura’s friends were embarrassing her by pretending to be Australian and were chatting up rugby players . That also meant that Laura got to stay with Mr X for the rest of the night. She even stayed at Mr X’s flat which was according to Laura dead posh and he had a good taste in music.
22nd October 1997
Laura got an itemised phone bill from her father who said she needs to pay £70 towards it. Laura kept getting calls from Mr X but she kept missing them. The last one said he'd be out of the country soon, and he wanted her to meet him again. Laura was still going out with Ben, but she wants to meet Mr X. Someone had been stealing her milk, and her friends are off to a Halloween party. She thinks the fire alarm will be set off again, which will lead to a fine. Her friends think she's weird anyway. Laura met a new friend called Sarah, who is really nice and they even check each other for spots. Laura was painting a picture for Ben, but couldn't decide who to give it to - Mr X or Ben.
24th October 1997
Laura had decided to go home to York from Uni for a bit because she felt she had had enough of it and had booked a holiday for her and Ben to Skegness much to Ben's surprise. She had booked in at the sunningdale hotel which had a hair dryer, tea and coffee making facilities and even a full English breakfast And Laura planned to turn up and surprise Ben after he finishes college in those shiny trousers he likes.
25th October 1997
Ben and Laura had checked into the hotel where they were known as Mr and Mrs Sayers. As Laura was writing today’s entry Ben was asleep they didn’t leave room for whole day except when Ben went out for some "supplies". The room seemed to be ok although they had run out of tea and coffee because they didn’t let cleaners in. Laura hadn’t had the chance to see anything of glorious Skegness yet because it was just too dark when they arrived. It was nice to see Ben again although Laura feels rejected after told she loved him as he didn’t say anything back and just said that he knows (that’s a classic line from a star wars film) it wasn’t the response Laura was hoping for and Laura thinks it could mean is that he doesn’t love her and possibly loves someone else like Jenny who Laura never got on with.
26th October 1997
Laura was on a quiet train back to Glasgow which was lucky as she was sure her make-up was smudged, Laura felt like she was in a film without a happy ending. Laura wanted to ask Ben about the whole I love you situation so she asked him when they were out for dinner so he couldn’t strop off! Ben would not tell Laura he loves her back as telling someone you love them gets you into trouble and complicates things, Laura doesn’t understand why this complicates things. Ben to try and escape the situation told Laura that she is not in love with him but is in love with the idea of being in love. Laura bought Ben a kiss me quick hat and Ben wore it all the time even when they was in bed! Laura is missing Ben already and is counting down the days until the Christmas holidays!
27th October 1997
Today it was Laura's first show on Glasgow radio station Subcity Radio with her friends Lisa and Lynne. Laura was nervous, so nervous that she went to a local bar for lunch with her mates and also a famous person who was a hot topic on their radio show - Mr X. On her show they were asking for requests and dedications but they got hardly any calls. Technical support was blaming it on “problems with the phones”. Laura had also heard from Ben who was being “dead supportive” about Laura’s work and had requested that he was sent samples of Laura’s work at Subcity as it should be an interesting listen. Laura seems to be getting settled into Uni and doesn’t think its that bad anymore.
28th October 1997
Laura started off today’s entry with some random words which she had in her head all day. She had experienced farts all day. She had finished her essay, done some laundry, had drink and it led to a drunk Laura. According to her boy friends it was highly amusing to be around Laura. She also phoned Ben who seemed quiet she was talking to him about Jenny, and according to Ben her accent has changed. Finally she decided was going to buy a plant...
8th November 1997
It was National Hangover Day, and Laura couldn't make it in to lectures. Ben and Jenny seemed to be getting rather close, and Laura was questioning him about that on the phone. He wasn't happy speaking to her. He wanted changes, and she joked about her accent. He was starting to sound like her dad, and she was feeling a million times worse. She's started talking to the diary today, but for some reason it isn't answering back. I wonder why?
19th November 1997
Laura was very upset. She got a letter from Ben this morning telling her she is dumped. She keeps trying to ring him but his mum tells her he does not want to talk to her. He told her that she was dumped because she changed and that he could not cope with her constant paranoia and he couldn’t deal with a intensive relationship during his exams (rubbish excuse). Laura finished Ben’s painting today and felt like ripping it up because that’s what it felt like he did with her heart. Laura tells us that Ben is the only thing that makes her happy and now he has gone.
20th November 1997
Laura couldn't stop listening to the Counting Crows. She couldn't stop thinking about Ben. He was the only guy who really knew her. She felt like walking into a pub and shouting 'I BLEED TOO!'. She doubted any one would notice. The one person who would understand her is the person why she is falling apart. She is breaking up at university in a little while. Mr X is seeing someone, and Mel and Alan got together. She wants him back. She doesn't want to grow up and get old without someone. At this point Scott felt it was appropriate for a bit of Westlife 'Against All Odds' followed by some more Counting Crows.
