Chappers calls Scott’s famously gullible mum Sandra with an elaborate hoax: she’s been selected to appear on Celebrity X Factor and perform “I’ve Got You Babe” with Scott, who’s supposedly standing in for an ill Chris Moyles.
The Scott Mills Show revisits its running gag of Scott’s mother’s extreme gullibility. Scott introduces the feature by cataloguing previous successful pranks: he’d convinced her he was being arrested by the roses, that he’d been caught in a fold-up bed going down the street, and that her car had broken its metatarsal and needed three new gearboxes. Despite knowing her tendency to believe everything, Scott argues the pranks help her learn not to trust everything she hears.
This time, Chappers rings Sandra posing as Miles Connor from ITV’s Celebrity X Factor. He explains that Chris Moyles has fallen ill and Scott has been selected to stand in for him. The catch: Sandra is needed as an audience member—and then to perform “I’ve Got You Babe” with Scott as a mother-and-son duet, replacing the planned performance between Chris and his own mother. When Sandra protests that she’s not a good singer, Chappers persuades her by having her sing down the phone, coaxing her through the Sonny and Cher classic. He promises a car will collect her between 5:30 and 6pm, and assures her the lyrics will be faxed or emailed in advance.
Throughout the call, Sandra’s initial hesitation gradually crumbles under polite, official-sounding reassurance. By the end, she’s committed to the performance, even as she admits nervousness about the whole thing. Back in the studio, Scott plays back Sandra’s rendition of “I’ve Got You Babe,” clearly pleased with how thoroughly she’s been convinced.
