6 September 2006: Egg On Your Face with Chapper

Chapper introduces a gloriously messy new game show format where Scott and Laura take turns smashing eggs on their heads — with only four hard-boiled eggs mixed in among two raw ones.

Chapper has devised “Egg On Your Face,” a game combining embarrassment with the genuine uncertainty of not knowing which eggs are hard-boiled and which are raw. Six eggs are numbered one to six, and players alternate picking and smashing them directly onto their heads. The catch is that four eggs are hard-boiled (safe) while two are raw (decidedly not safe for hair and dignity).

Laura goes first, immediately drawing a raw egg for an unfortunate start. Scott fares better with a hard-boiled egg. As the game progresses, both players react with increasing anxiety as the raw eggs remain in play. There’s genuine suspense about which numbers contain the dangerous raw eggs, and some entertaining banter about Scott’s shirt and the general unfairness of the setup.

By the final two eggs — numbers one and two — Laura and Scott must each pick one and smash simultaneously. Despite Scott’s promise to play fair, there’s the usual playful accusation that he might cheat by timing his smash differently. In the end, both players take their final eggs to the head, bringing the game to a suitably grotty conclusion with yolks and shells all around.
