22 September 2006: Flirt Divert and Jo Whiley Gets Mardy

Scott Mills is filling in for Grimmy on Breakfast with a bumper Flirt Divert feature, complete with hilariously garbled voicemail messages — and Laura’s speculative baby names cause chaos with the unofficial fan site.

The episode opens with a Flirt Divert special, the feature where people hand out the show’s dummy phone number to holiday acquaintances they never want to hear from again. Scott plays a series of voicemail messages left by people trying to reconnect, including a car salesman named Peter discussing a Volvo and a particularly bizarre repeated message about someone insisting “you’re a woman” — a phrase that becomes the running gag of the segment, quoted back repeatedly by callers who find it baffling and funny in equal measure.

The second half centres on Laura, who’s been the subject of speculation on the unofficial mills fan site, where listeners are running a thread asking “if Laura is really up the duff.” Laura firmly denies being pregnant but plays along by suggesting baby names if she ever does have twins — including “Sexy and Randy,” which Scott correctly predicts would be prime candidates for bullying at school. The team then riffs on what Laura might have been called as a girl (her mum revealed yesterday it would have been Tracy), and callers ring in with alternative suggestions: Dorothy, Molly, Heather, Haley, Daisy, and Fanny, leading to Scott apologising to all the Tracys and Barbaras in the UK for the earlier jokes.

Throughout, the bizarre voicemail about being “a woman” keeps cropping up as callback fodder, particularly from a caller named Claire.
