13 October 2006: Florist Messages and Mystery Phone Numbers

Scott tests how far florists will go when asked to write outrageous messages on flower cards, then helps a suspicious girlfriend investigate a mysterious woman’s phone number found in her boyfriend’s jeans pocket.

The show opens with the florist game, where Scott and the team call a flower shop posing as someone sending flowers to a newly married brother. They push boundaries by asking the florist to write increasingly cheeky messages on the card, including “Too bad nobody likes your wife” and “How could somebody as handsome as you have such an ugly baby?” The florist reluctantly agrees to write the lot, showcasing just how accommodating flower shops can be.

The main event involves a caller named Louise who found a phone number with a woman’s name—Melanie—written on it in her boyfriend’s back pocket while doing laundry. Despite suspicions from a past relationship, she’s nervous about confronting him directly. Scott offers to call the number during the newsbeat to find out who Melanie is. The reveal: it’s the answerphone for the Paradise Club, a venue on the first floor (“take the stairs to heaven,” as their message cheerfully notes). While it could be innocent—a stag do, a night out with mates, or someone’s joke—the ambiguity leaves plenty of room for listeners to text in theories.

The show also features the mystery phone numbers game, flirt-divert calls (where callers leave awkward messages thinking they’re contacting someone they’ve just met), and an appearance from “Kinky Burnard,” a mysterious character making uncomfortable chat-up line suggestions. A John Peel Day celebration rounds out the episode, reflecting on forgotten bands from the late DJ’s early championing years.
