21 November 2006: Matt Willis on I’m a Celebrity and New Music

Matt Willis visits the show fresh from the Australian jungle, discussing his surprising turnaround on I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here and his new music release.

Matt Willis appears on the show to chat about his recent stint on I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here. He reveals he’d turned down the show four times before finally agreeing to do it, initially worried it would damage his image and put off by the prospect of sleeping rough and eating rice for three weeks. However, he admits the primary motivation for eventually saying yes was promotion for his album and new singles — something he’s candid about, acknowledging that TV opportunities for pop artists are limited. Despite expecting to hate the experience, he found himself thoroughly enjoying it and leaving with fond memories.

The conversation explores his pre-jungle expectations versus reality. Matt discusses meeting the other celebrities for the first time when he arrived in Australia, noting he didn’t know many of them beforehand. He mentions Faith Brown (whom his girlfriend Emma had suggested he’d get along with), Jason Donovan, and designer Scott (famous for creating a diamond dress). He’s less enthusiastic about some of the other contestants, though Scott emerges as decent despite initial reservations about his personality.

The show plays his new single during the interview and takes calls from listeners, including a young caller named Adam asking about tips for his school nativity play called “I’m So Glad You Get Me Out of Here” — a connection that prompts gentle ribbing from JK and Joel. Another caller, Sam, asks about the best thing he ate in the jungle, to which Matt enthusiastically describes an ice cream reward as life-changing, reducing the caller to tears.
