A chaotic show packed with Dalek voice boxes, a surprising theory about melon-buying habits, and an apology for Jo Whiley accidentally swearing on air during a bingo game.
The episode opens with Scott playing novelty Dalek voice boxes that someone famous had specially made for the show, where the Daleks threaten to “exterminate” listeners if they don’t tune into Danny Howard’s show. Scott himself attempts to use one, discovering it’s harder to sound menacing than it looks.
Later, the show explores an embarrassing supermarket shopping baskets feature, where callers ring in with tales of innocent items that look questionable when purchased together. One caller, Louise, describes buying a banana, gritty cream, baby oil, and rubber gloves — all perfectly innocent separately, but deeply suspicious in combination. Another caller from Manchester, Lindsay, admits to buying two large melons and reveals that Laura’s theory (discussed earlier in the show) about melon size corresponding to breast size has stuck with her, leading her to second-guess her produce choices.
The show also features a lengthy section playing extracts from “Boys Beware,” a genuinely shocking 1950s American public information film warning against homosexuality. Scott and the team react with disbelief at the film’s casual conflation of homosexuality with danger and predatory behaviour, with Scott noting the film’s fundamental lack of understanding.
A caller named Zoe rings in from Timmer complaining about her dad’s summer fashion choices — specifically his short shorts and socks-with-sandals combination — which she finds mortifying when friends visit.
The episode also includes an apology for Jo Whiley accidentally swearing during a bingo game earlier in the morning, with clips from other weekend presenters (Fern and Reggie) also playing innuendo-laden content.
