5 October 2007: McFly, Mel C’s Spice Girls News, and the Matt Damon Game

McFly visit the studio to perform and attempt the hoover trick, while Mel C drops exclusive news about new Spice Girls tour dates and a brand new single called “Headlines.”

A busy Friday show opens with chat about Scott’s Loaded Laster Award nomination, before moving into the day’s two major features. The Matt Damon game — where callers shout “Matt Damon!” in public places to see who notices — is played at Tesco in Braintree with mixed results, and later at a playground where a child takes part. The game naturally leads into the Mel C interview, where she reveals two major announcements: new Spice Girls tour dates on 15th and 16th January at the O2 Arena in London, and a brand new single titled “Headlines (Friendship Never Ends)” due for release on 19th November. Mel C teases that it’s a return to the studio with two new tracks recorded for a greatest hits album, though she’s cagey about which Spice Girl sings first on the track.

McFly then arrive as the mystery guests, sparking much banter about how often they appear on the show. There’s discussion of their recent appearance on a ghost-hunting programme (with a clip of Scott and a guest from the previous day doing the hoover trick for comparison — a man who can use Henry the Hoover without his hands). The band performs a spontaneous comedy song about head lice written on the spot by Danny, before attempting their own version of the hoover trick with varying degrees of enthusiasm. The show also features attempts to make Laura laugh with clean jokes and a game where Dougie tries to make her sick — she has waves but holds firm.
