24 October 2007: Earl Robinson’s Week-Long Hiccups and the No Cussing Club

Scott discovers a sports presenter in Michigan who’s been suffering from hiccups for over a week, then joins a no-cussing club started by a 14-year-old in California — and reveals that he, Jo Whiley, and Chappers have been filming together for Deirdre’s video case book.

The show opens with Scott sympathising with Earl Robinson, a presenter on Michigan radio station WGPKAR, who has had continuous hiccups for a week. Scott reveals this has been a lifelong fear of his, stemming from a childhood TV show about someone with persistent hiccups. Earl has tried all the classic remedies — drinking water upside down, mustard, vinegar, holding his breath — with no success. Listeners call in with their own hiccup theories, though as Scott notes, it’s hard to tell whether these are genuine remedies or forms of torture. The show also mentions the world record for hiccups: 65 years, held by a pig farmer who suffered from 1922 to 1987.

Scott then announces he’s joined the No Cussing Club, started by a 14-year-old from South Pasadena, California, who challenged his schoolmates to stop swearing after noticing how much they cursed without realising it. Scott has received an orange No Cussing Club t-shirt and a certificate pledging not to cuss, swear, or tell dirty jokes. The club’s motto is “If you want to hang with us, don’t cuss” — and Scott plays a rap version the club has created, featuring teenagers and even adults in a park accepting the challenge.

Finally, Scott reveals that he, Jo Whiley, and Chappers have filmed a sketch called “Scott’s Office Fantasy” for Deirdre’s video case book on The Sun’s website. He plays a clip from an actual Deirdre case book video to show the acting standard they’re competing against, joking that their performance is “Oscar standard” by comparison. The sketch involves all three of them in bed together, though Scott remains coy about the exact plot details.
