Scott’s mice are back and bolder than ever, Loose Lips returns in full dramatic teen-soap style, and there’s an unexpected engagement announcement that leaves Laura decidedly unenthused.
The show opens with Scott’s ongoing mouse problem escalating to new levels of audacity — they’re now so confident they’re approaching his flatmate during KFC meals. Scott discusses his general uselessness around the house, admitting he can’t handle basic domestic tasks, which sparks a phone-in feature exploring listeners who’ve never done laundry, washing up, or ironed a shirt. One caller, KT, a 19-year-old university student, proudly admits she’s never washed clothes, done her own ironing, or mopped a floor, relying entirely on her mother.
The episode’s centrepiece is Loose Lips, presented this week in full “Falcon Beach” teen-drama style (the reference points being The OC and Lagoon). Producers plant fake gossip with a girl called Rachel about kissing her friend Katie’s boyfriend, then recruit Rachel’s friend Charlotte — a known gossip — to see if she’ll spread it. Despite attempts from multiple friends (Alona and Jordan) to extract the secret, Charlotte surprisingly keeps quiet, only confessing when Rachel calls to admit it was a setup for the radio feature. Charlotte emerges vindicated, having resisted blabbing despite her reputation.
The show also airs caller stories about people with surprising domestic blind spots, including a 60-year-old woman who didn’t know how to wash up properly. Chicken Impossible gets another airing after positive listener response. The episode closes with a surprise announcement: Pippa, a usually silent member of the Radio One team, has gotten engaged — news that visibly irritates Laura, who’s been vocal about wanting to be engaged herself, leading to some good-natured tension.
