27 June 2008: Scott Films Hollyoaks, Casts Visit Manchester Studio

Scott has just filmed scenes for Hollyoaks (playing a policeman in a storyline involving handcuffs and blackmail) and sits down with four cast members — Nick Pickard (Tony), Stephanie Waring (Cindy), Darren John Jeffery (OB), and Sarah Jane Dunn (Mandy) — to discuss the show and play a soap trivia quiz.

Fresh from a day on the Hollyoaks set in Liverpool, Scott shares his experience of filming in the iconic village, noting how surprisingly small the actual set is compared to how it appears on television. He’d spent much of the day getting in and out of a police car as his character, and describes his absurdly elaborate plotline: his character sleeps with the McQueen girls, gets handcuffed to a bed, and ends up in a compromising photo that accidentally gets mixed with a pub menu and sent to the printers.

The cast discuss the major storyline airing the next day: Max’s wedding and death. Nick Pickard, the longest-serving Hollyoaks character, is on hand along with returning cast members. The conversation touches on the physical demands of acting, the repetitive nature of filming multiple takes, and the show’s willingness to embrace silly, wacky storylines.

The highlight is “Dead or in Manchester,” a soap trivia quiz where Scott and the guests identify whether classic soap characters died or simply left town. Questions range from Coronation Street (Annie Malone freezing in a freezer) to EastEnders (Barry Evans pushed off a cliff) to the delightfully absurd Sunset Beach (Virginia Harrison’s turkey-baster plot). The cast do well, and the quiz showcases just how much random drama unfolds across British soaps.
