2 July 2008: Show Homes, Beccy’s Classifieds, and Ben Shepard’s Secret Sadness

Beccy confesses her odd habit of touring show homes she has no intention of buying, prompting Scott to joke about moving into one with David Hasselhoff. The show also features a new round of “Oh! What’s Occurring?”, a string of hilarious classified ads, and an interrogation of Ben Shepard to determine if he’s really a normal person.

The episode opens with Beccy recounting an embarrassing moment at a petrol station where she accidentally put her arm around a teenage stranger instead of her boyfriend. This sparks a running conversation about people mistaking strangers for their partners in public places, with callers ringing in to share similar stories—from swimmers in pools to mishaps at weddings. The conversation takes an unusual turn when Beccy reveals she loves visiting show homes even though she has absolutely no intention of buying a house. Scott’s incredulous (“That’s weird”), but Beccy explains it’s just a fun activity she’s enjoyed for years. She even describes taking her Greek boyfriend along to one recently, to his apparent confusion. Callers share their own show-home habits, including one man who invents elaborate backstories for his visits.

The second half features two key segments. “Beccy’s Classifieds” sees her reading out bizarre classified ads from the internet: someone selling a handful of frozen peas for a pound, a woman advertising for a best male friend, and—most absurdly—a bride looking for a stranger to pay $5,700 to be her bridesmaid. The ads spark lively discussion about why anyone would buy or sell such things.

The episode concludes with “Oh! What’s Occurring?”, a new quiz show pitting Joe Cole and Beccy against each other (with Matt Dawson as a team captain). Questions involve Vernon calling himself to see how long he’d talk, counting F-words in David Hasselhoff’s appearance on a cooking show, and testing how long Max from early breakfast can watch “the scariest film in the world” before running away. The show ends with Ben Shepard’s interview about whether he’s a “proper loser” like everyone else, during which he admits to nearly falling for a Nigerian email scam and discusses various everyday mishaps.
