4 March 2025: The world’s fastest pasty crimper and Steve’s quiz mistake

The world’s fastest Cornish pasty crimper

Scott spoke to the world’s fastest Cornish pasty crimper after discovering that shaping the edge of a pasty could be treated as a competitive skill.

The guest explained the technique required to produce a secure and recognisable crimp at speed. It was not simply a matter of pinching the pastry: consistency, sealing and presentation still mattered.

Scott asked how somebody trained for such a title and whether the skill transferred into ordinary kitchen work. The answer suggested years of repetition had made the hand movements almost automatic.

The conversation also covered the cultural importance of the Cornish pasty and the pride attached to making one correctly. Scott was especially interested in whether outsiders routinely got the crimp wrong.

Listeners responded with their own experiences of pasty-making and arguments about fillings, orientation and whether a badly crimped pasty still counted.

The Easiest Quiz: Steve scores ten

Steve, a dentist, attempted to beat Becky’s 28. He answered questions about trees, glass, light, beaches, butterflies, lemonade, squares, card games, acorns and toothpaste.

His answer “acorns” for something that grows on trees surprised Scott, but Steve explained that he could see squirrels carrying them through the garden from his surgery.

The quiz paused over his answer “butterfly”, but allowed it after Scott pleaded with the unseen judges. Steve then moved on to the question that ended his run: “Turmeric, paprika and cinnamon are all types of what?”

Steve answered “herbs” rather than spices. He immediately realised the mistake and said he was “fuming” with himself.

He finished with ten points and admitted that one wrong question could completely derail a player despite the title of the quiz. Scott told him not to be “aggro for the rest of the day” and reminded listeners that Radio 2 remained particularly popular in dental surgeries.

The Birthday Game: Audrey spins through to Tight Fit

Audrey celebrated her 70th birthday in Budapest with 11 relatives and friends. The group planned a river cruise with unlimited prosecco.

She hoped for the Manic Street Preachers, Pet Shop Boys, Paul Heaton, The Housemartins or The Beautiful South after enjoying those artists at Radio 2 in the Park in Preston.

Her first spin was Will Young’s Evergreen, the first Pop Idol winner’s single. Audrey liked it but wanted something faster.

The second was Mariah Carey’s Without You, a cover of the Harry Nilsson song. Audrey again rejected the slower choice and accepted the risk of the final spin.

She was left with Tight Fit’s The Lion Sleeps Tonight, number one for three weeks in 1982. Audrey immediately embraced it as a fun record that would cheer everybody up and said it was the best of the three.

The Good Morning Minute also brought together specific details from listeners around the country.

4 March 2025: Vernon Kay

The handover revisited the pasty-crimping record and Steve’s disappointment, while looking ahead to Sue Perkins joining the programme on Wednesday.
