15 October 2009: Sara Cox mentions food 140 times in three days

The return of Sara Cox food watch

The team revived one of its most reliable recurring ideas: counting how often Sara Cox mentioned food.

Sara said she had recently become conscious of the habit and was actively trying not to talk about food. The others immediately pointed out that she had mentioned grapes within roughly six minutes of Monday’s programme and spent a long time discussing an egg yolk.

Jono from Unofficial Mills had listened to all three shows and produced both the montage and the final count.

Before hearing it, the studio predictions included 70, 75 and roughly 90 references.

What Sara talked about

The montage began with Sara saying: “Don’t get me started on food.”

It then included coffee, a failed Chinese meal, ribs, tartare sauce, a dandelion-leaf diet, goat’s cheese, cupcakes, fried chicken, chicken kebabs, mixed vegetables and tropical fruit.

Other references covered seaweed, duck sauce, roast chicken, Greek food, diets without carbohydrates, red meat, dairy or gluten, a Mexican night, cheese plants, mango, pork pies, chocolate, cake stands and champagne.

Sara moved on to salad leaves, cherry tomatoes, balsamic dressing, Cheddar, sweet potatoes, Bolognese, WKD, another Chinese takeaway, muffins, cauliflower cheese, soup, cabbage and Madeira cake.

The later section included sausage rolls, favourite cakes, tea, spinach, salt and pepper, biscuits, mashed potato, sausages and gravy, chicken curry, salmon, KFC, mayonnaise, Nando’s, more pork pies, pizza, chips, sandwiches, crème caramel, prawn cocktail, cucumber, pickles, German sausage, cooked meat, beef and Oxo cubes.

At the end of the montage, Sara could be heard congratulating herself for not mentioning food once.

The final total

Jono’s final count was 140 food or drink references across the three days.

The result was well above all the studio predictions. Sara was described as the unquestioned champion of the feature, while the programme thanked Jono for listening to and counting every example.
