Jimmy Carr joined Scott after receiving an honorary Doctor of Arts degree from Southampton Solent University.
The team inspected the certificate, joked about the formal wording and repeatedly pretended that Carr had thanked the wrong university.
Carr discussed recording Friday Night with Jonathan Ross alongside Serena Williams and Robbie Williams. He described the strange green-room experience in which guests chatted casually, then suddenly realised a camera had cut to them.
He also discussed The X Factor, Jedward, Simon Cowell’s personal security and the annual Christmas rush of celebrity interviews promoting DVDs, books and tours.
Carr said he used Twitter because it allowed an immediate response from people and felt easier than Facebook. Before leaving, he went upstairs to appear on the programme’s live Beccy Cam.
Missed Connections
The programme’s “missed connections” feature collected adverts from people trying to find strangers they had briefly encountered in public.
One person addressed the man sitting in front of them during a screening of Up at the Vue cinema in Accrington.
The man had initially said the advertiser had a cute laugh. They then exaggerated the laugh so much — including giggling during sad scenes — that he moved seats. The advert nevertheless asked whether the relationship could be taken “to the next level”.
Another writer regularly chatted with somebody working in a local newsagent.
He had accidentally taken an adult magazine to the till while meaning to buy a normal lads’ magazine. When the person he fancied emerged from the back room and gave him a strange look, he hid the publication inside a copy of The Daily Telegraph.
He claimed to have thrown the magazine into recycling and asked whether they could still go for a drink.
A woman tried to find a man who worked for an undertaker after seeing him at a funeral.
She had worn a tight black dress and high heels, smiled at him several times and pretended to cry when her aunt disapproved. She hoped he would reply before she began attending random funerals in search of him.
The final advert came from a man attracted to a blonde, “curvy” employee at his local pet shop.
He had repeatedly visited intending to ask her out but instead kept buying animals. After purchasing seven pets, including several rodents, he had no room left in his flat and said he could not safely return to the shop.
What Are Those Old People On About?
In What Are Those Old People On About?, older people named Harry, George and Joan were shown photographs of current celebrities and asked to describe them without giving the name. Scott, Beccy and Chappers then guessed from the clues.
Madonna
The first woman was described as tall, slim, talented and able to make body movements few people could manage.
The older people thought she had been around for a long time and had overdeveloped arms from lifting weights. They said her face was attractive but her arms looked masculine and should be covered.
The mention of children and adoption helped Beccy identify Madonna.
Jedward
The next photograph produced immediate excitement.
The pair were described as looking like brothers, having comic-book faces and lots of personality despite not needing to do very much.
Harry thought they were fantastic and imagined them becoming the new Frank Sinatra or Bing Crosby.
Beccy correctly identified John and Edward — Jedward.
Nick Knowles
The final man was described as having a beautiful body, a small head in comparison with his muscular physique and a good head of hair.
The older people thought he looked practical, willing to get involved and particularly suitable if somebody needed their home decorating.
Guesses included Peter Andre, David Beckham and a swimmer before the answer was revealed as Nick Knowles.
Beccy and Chappers finished the celebrity special with one point each.
