3 December 2009: Anthony Costa, Agent Lube and the imaginary assassination

Agent Lube’s latest mission

The programme continued the long prank in which Beccy posed as “Lube”, the head of MI5, and recruited Scott’s flatmate as a secret agent.

His first mission had been to assassinate Blue singer Anthony Costa and make it appear that Duncan James was responsible. Costa had previously phoned the flatmate to warn him off.

A mutual friend now called and casually announced that Anthony Costa had been assassinated. The flatmate appeared to accept the news as part of his secret-service storyline rather than immediately blaming Scott.

Lube and kumquat

The day’s title also came from the increasingly absurd code words and pronunciation used in the spy calls. Ordinary words such as “kumquat” were treated as though they carried operational meaning.

Dear Scott

Listeners wrote about the flatmate’s willingness to continue, Anthony Costa’s involvement and the point at which a prank stopped being believable.
