The selfie stick acquires a remote control
Scott and Chris’s selfie sticks had arrived, including a bright pink version for Scott. The previous day’s enthusiasm had created a practical question: how could anybody press the phone’s shutter button once it was fixed to the far end of the pole?
Listener Ash, an engineer, explained that the middle button on a connected headset could trigger the photograph. The cable only needed to be wound down the stick. It was an effective solution, although Scott lost interest as soon as the explanation became technical.
Gary’s dates produce appliances and animal noises
Unlucky Gary had been on two dates in six weeks. The first man somehow learned that Gary’s new flat lacked a microwave and delivered one to his workplace after a single evening together. Gary did not want another date but was unsure whether rejecting the man also meant returning the appliance.
Scott and Chris concluded that the microwave had become Gary’s. The practical lesson was either never to discuss missing kitchen equipment on a first date or to discuss as much of it as possible.
The second man announced in a bar that he could bark like any breed of dog, provided he heard the animal first. He demonstrated two breeds loudly enough to attract the attention of everybody nearby, including an actual dog. Gary had not heard from him the following day.
Given a choice between the microwave buyer and the dog impersonator, Gary preferred the latter. Scott asked for another report if the relationship progressed, while Chris questioned whether these were examples of bad luck or simply Gary’s remarkable judgment.
Radio 4 listeners receive the wrong programme
BBC Radio 4’s Feedback investigated a technical problem with the iPlayer. Listeners who selected programmes including Book at Bedtime had instead received one of Scott’s loud Friday remix shows.
The complainants had expected calm speech and found themselves listening to dance music. Scott was delighted that a Radio 1 mix had broken into Radio 4’s schedule; the Radio 4 audience sounded less convinced by this unexpected example of cross-network promotion.
Chris also introduced his new television obsession, First Time Farmers. He remained fascinated by young-farmer culture and the glossy treatment of a woman who loved cows. Danny Howard played Real or No Real, confirming that Reef’s “Place Your Hands” was still selling hundreds of downloads each week for no obvious reason.
