Ashton survives and Michael finds a passport
Scott played his full interview with 5 Seconds of Summer, recorded before their Big Weekend performance. Ashton Irwin discussed the illness that had led to his appendix being removed and his absence from the Teen Awards, although he said the operation later appeared not to have addressed the actual problem.
Michael Clifford had lost a passport on a flight from San Francisco to Los Angeles, briefly describing both cities as though they were in different states. A replacement left him claiming to possess two passports, before the others pointed out that using both would create a more serious issue than losing one.
Gongs, girlfriends and Norwich
The band remembered Michael striking Helen’s head with the relationship transfer deadline gong during an earlier visit. The resulting photograph had received tens of thousands of reactions, encouraging Ashton to consider adding a gong to his drum kit.
All four described themselves as effectively single because touring left little time for relationships. Scott explained the boy-band theory of a winter girlfriend, somebody to share cold evenings and Christmas presents with before becoming single again in summer, but the group stopped short of adopting it.
They had arrived in Norwich by ferry in the early hours and knew almost nothing about the city. Their main questions concerned the nearest pub and whether Tinder worked there, giving Scott the difficult task of providing a local guide immediately before their set.
Ashton’s supposed bottom
Scott wanted to measure the band’s enormous social-media reach. They photographed the crease of Ashton’s elbow, an old visual trick that made it resemble a bottom, and posted it from the group account with the caption “Ashton’s butt”.
The picture collected thousands of retweets and favourites within minutes. Michael also explained that his personal Twitter account had once been restricted to adults for months, depressing his follower total against Calum, Luke and Ashton while leaving him as the group’s stronger Instagram presence.
The interview continued through their shared showers, the tour manager’s whistle for keeping everybody on schedule and attempts to invent an alarming newspaper headline. The band proposed that One Direction made them want to quit music because they were so good, then settled into the less plausible declaration that Michael wanted to quit music altogether.
Slaves soak Chris
Slaves joined the live programme after their acclaimed Big Weekend and Live Lounge appearances. Isaac Holman and Laurie Vincent faced Chris in Innuendo Bingo, with Grimmy’s enthusiasm for the band expected to draw him into the studio at any moment.
The clips included property programmes, Radio 2 messages, grandparents meeting and a football description of somebody coming in a person’s face. Slaves attacked the game with full cups, repeatedly soaking Chris and immediately accepting an invitation to return.
The wet clothes revived another running problem: the unusual launderette that cleaned the show’s Bingo kit. Scott and Chris knew the owner disliked their requests and rarely promised a reliable collection date, but authenticity demanded that the accumulated Big Weekend water and spit eventually went back to the same place.
