Suspended Innuendo Bingo
The second Student Tour show came from the Paul McCartney Auditorium at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, where former student Nick Grimshaw joined the programme. Scott’s promised twist involved fastening Grimmy and Chris into harnesses and lifting them above the stage for the first suspended Innuendo Bingo.
The men struggled to hold their water while hanging horizontally and turning slowly in front of the audience. The clips included newlyweds “twiddling their new rings” and other familiar favourites, but the sight of two Radio 1 presenters spraying each other while dangling from the ceiling became the real attraction. Chris regretted wearing women’s jeans with an unsuitable fit, and both players were left trying to regain their dignity while the crew dealt with the water below.
Becoming Paul Hollywood
With the Bake Off final approaching, LIPA voice teacher Laura helped Chris become more like Liverpool’s Paul Hollywood. She encouraged him to imagine a prowling silver fox or lion, narrow his eyes, smile into his cheeks and press down into the familiar judging voice.
Chris practised on clips about moist cakes and clever baking, gradually adding the stare, growl and confidence. He was pleased with his final attempt, even if nobody mistook him for the real Hollywood.
Societies that should not exist
Scott sent Chris outside with a sign-up table and fed him the names of fake student societies through an earpiece. Chris persuaded students to join a Gravity Society, whose members would meet to pick up objects and appreciate them falling, complete with the slogan “We love the drop”.
He also promoted an appreciation society for Richard Osman and, despite his continuing jealousy of Brooklyn Beckham, attempted one devoted to admiring Beckham’s Instagram, modelling and appearance in the Vamps’ video. The supposedly impossible clubs attracted enough names that Scott began worrying the students might expect real meetings.
Laura prepares to ask
Laura returned by video call and confirmed that she expected to see Hot Lecture Guy at an English social that night. Grimmy had already discussed the story on Breakfast, and even a service-station worker had asked the touring team for an update.
Suggestions included pretending to need help at a pool table, performing Westlife karaoke and simply asking for coffee. Laura planned to improvise, despite Scott and Chris’s fear that she would wait until the end of a messy night and lose her chance. She promised to report back the following day.
In Real or No Real, Grimmy learned that the auditorium had not hosted a suspended wedding, while Uzbekistan really did shut down the internet during university entrance examinations to reduce cheating. Liverpool then handed the tour to Harper Adams.
