Back safely from Blackpool Tower
Scott returned relieved that no tall buildings remained in his immediate future. The Children in Need abseil had been delayed while the team waited for wind to ease, only for it to strengthen once Scott began descending. Afterwards he was told that the conditions would normally have stopped the attempt, but the live broadcast and charity night had forced it forward.
The first backwards movement remained the worst part. A safety instructor told Scott to lock his knees as he went over the edge, prompting noises that Chris replayed in the studio. The tower had looked spectacular under lights, and Scott had completed the challenge set by Sir Terry Wogan despite spending the previous fortnight expecting it to be cancelled.
A national Who Game rematch
Chris joined Scott for another Who Game against listeners. Sloppy disks, shell suits, the Millennium Bug, Von Dutch caps, Miami 7 and Michael Jackson’s chimpanzee Bubbles produced the required cries of recognition.
The callers arrived one after another, making the feature less a conventional quiz than a competition to retrieve increasingly distant pieces of popular culture. Scott and Chris performed better as a team, although every strong answer simply encouraged listeners to search further into childhood memory.
Silence at the urinal
Adam asked whether he had behaved correctly after finding himself beside Niall Horan in a toilet. He chose the neighbouring urinal, remained silent and waited until both had left before asking for a photograph.
Scott and Chris approved. A celebrity without an entourage was unusually exposed and unable to move, so conversation should be left to them to initiate. Scott recalled talking beside Zayn Malik and Daniel Radcliffe, while Chris remembered unknowingly discussing cricket with Remi Burgz from the other side of a cubicle. The agreed rule was silence during the practical business, followed by a polite request outside.
Greg James played Real or No Real. Simon Cowell really had paid £2,000 for a luxury hotel suite simply to take a bath when his boiler failed. One Direction did not plan to stay in touch through their parents’ landlines during the hiatus, although the band had revealed that some members did not even have one another’s mobile numbers, creating a genuine obstacle to any future reunion.
