From the jungle party to scented dirt
The I’m a Celebrity wrap party was happening in Australia while the show was on air, allowing Scott and Chris to receive increasingly lively updates from friends working there. Tony Hadley had already sung “Somebody Told Me”, and the expectation was that the reports would become less coherent as the afternoon continued.
Scott had spent the previous evening supporting Nick Grimshaw at The X Factor. The judges’ dressing rooms smelled of expensive candles and aftershave, but Grimmy had chosen a candle deliberately scented like soil, mud and grass. Scott also found himself sitting in the shower cubicle because the room was so crowded with visitors.
Both men reluctantly accepted that Justin Bieber’s Purpose had turned them into Beliebers. Chris was not yet ready to tell all his friends, but Scott assigned him the full album as homework.
Read me the menu
The show returned to attractive automated voices, particularly the self-checkout announcement about an unexpected item in the bagging area. Listener Kate then revealed that her boyfriend had developed a more elaborate system for choosing dinner. If he could not decide, he closed his eyes and asked her to read the menu in a slow, seductive voice.
Kate demonstrated with chocolate fondant, gammon and chips and the phrase that took over the show: “shaved meat in a pitta with all the sauces.” She added descriptive words when menu entries were too short and could turn even the least glamorous late-night food into something desirable. Listeners became hungry, one driver pulled into a takeaway, and Scott proposed a telephone line devoted entirely to sexy menu readings.
One week until the deadline
Relationship Transfer Deadline Day was confirmed for 16 December. The transfer window would close at 3pm, after which anybody still in a relationship had to remain with that partner until 6 January. A caller with doubts about his relationship was reminded that the show was not encouraging a breakup, merely enforcing its annual ban on festive dumping.
Greg James played Real or No Real, including a claim about Taylor Swift holidaying with 125 members of her band and crew and a final update from the I’m a Celebrity party. The round ended in a draw.
