Scott becomes an Only Connect answer
Scott is delighted to appear as an answer on Only Connect, a programme he normally watches only to feel intellectually inadequate. A sequence of Radio 1 handovers begins with Newsbeat and Danny Howard and requires contestants to identify what follows.
The players do not reach Chappers at 13:00, but Scott considers the mention a major personal achievement. The far more difficult questions elsewhere in the quiz preserve his belief that its contestants are operating at an entirely different level.
Young Joe Biden takes the lock screen
Chris changes his phone background to a photograph of a young Joe Biden relaxing beneath palm trees. Social media has rediscovered the future vice-president and turned his friendship with Barack Obama into a series of memes.
Scott accepts that the old photograph is striking but cannot understand why Chris now carries it around as his lock screen. Charlie Sloth later joins Innuendo Bingo, facing local-radio clips about a very large hole, the recurring stiffy selfie and the precise way a sports presenter describes somebody’s position.
A much happier version of the world
Chris introduces family friend Laura, whose understanding of technology was transformed when she learnt that “the cloud” is really a room full of computers. She had imagined photographs travelling into an actual cloud, wondered whether everybody received one of their own and never considered what rain might do to the files.
Laura’s world remains wonderfully literal. She does not watch the news, knows only that a rich man has replaced Barack Obama, and believes lost keys placed down a drain can keep one another company. Listeners immediately ask for her to return with a positive bulletin of good news, while Scott wants her explanation of Brexit when the time comes.
