A missing tooth meets a major booking
Scott learned that something enormous was being arranged for Friday’s programme, which made the temporary loss of one of his front teeth much more urgent. A dental repair had failed over Christmas and he had been broadcasting with a visible gap while waiting for an appointment.
He pleaded with his dentist to cement the tooth back before the cameras arrived. Chris preferred the prospect of “Pirate Mills” interviewing a global star and suggested emergency joke-shop teeth if the proper repair could not be completed. Scott even considered booking hair and make-up for the middle of the night.
Ed Sheeran is coming back
The secret was finally revealed: Ed Sheeran would return to Radio 1 the following morning, co-host Breakfast and play new music for the first time after his year-long break. Listeners around the world immediately began making plans to wake early.
Scott wanted stories from people who had taken their own gap years, hoping somebody might challenge Ed’s tales of travelling through Australia, New Zealand and other parts of the world. The programme treated the appearance as an international event, with listeners overseas already arranging their mornings around it.
The first-date set menu
Listeners admitted using the same reliable venue for a succession of first dates. Sam McTrusty of Twin Atlantic joined from Glasgow and named the Lighthouse, whose long spiral staircase and city views gave him both romance and an early test of whether a date could manage the climb.
Sam avoided advertising his band too heavily and generally described himself simply as a musician. Elsewhere, the Jan Slam NFL competition required entrants to answer their returning call with the word “helmet”. Several phones rang unanswered or were greeted with an ordinary hello before somebody finally followed the instruction and claimed the prize.
