5 April 2017: Chris performs Shower-oke before breakfast

An early-morning panic system

Scott woke at 3.15am convinced he had missed the programme. His fear of oversleeping had already led to a red emergency telephone being installed beside his bed, while the team exchanged “wide awake” messages every morning once everybody was safely up.

Chris admitted he showered the night before rather than getting up earlier. Scott sent him to the BBC’s basement changing rooms for the return of Shower-oke.

Shower the horse, I’m done

Once Chris was under the water, Scott gave him Anne-Marie’s “Ciao Adios”. The chorus became the deliberately mangled line “shower the horse, I’m done”, which Chris repeatedly sang towards the occupied cubicles.

Nobody joined in. One person coughed loudly, possibly as a coded instruction to stop.

The world waits for Harry Styles

Scott had heard “Sign of the Times” under strict conditions. He could not review it or reveal meaningful details, but claimed he might have captured its opening notes. The fragment he played to selected fans was deliberately useless, yet their desire to believe made even poor piano sound potentially historic.
