24 April 2006: Scott’s Arrested for Home Shopping Channel Debt

Scott pulls an elaborate prank on his mum, calling to say he’s been arrested for not paying for an exercise machine from a home shopping channel — and remarkably, she falls for it, even when a “policeman” joins the call with increasingly absurd additional charges.

This episode features one of Scott’s signature prank calls to his own mother, framed as an experiment to test her gullibility. Scott rings her claiming he’s been arrested because he purchased an Orbitrac exercise machine from a shopping channel and forgot to pay for it. His mum initially panics and agrees to speak to the police officer who supposedly has him in custody.

The prank escalates when the “policeman” (with a comedically poor accent) informs Scott’s mum of increasingly ridiculous charges: not only has Scott allegedly stolen the exercise machine, but they’ve also discovered he’s keeping livestock — specifically one cow and six pigs — in his house, apparently stolen from local farms. The officer claims these offences could carry a sentence of four to six years.

Throughout the call, Scott’s mum remains genuinely concerned and confused, asking what she should do and trying to help her son. The prank reaches its peak when Scott’s “final phone call” is granted, at which point he reveals the hoax. Scott and his co-presenter note that both Scott’s acting and the “policeman’s” performance were deliberately poor, which makes it all the more remarkable that Scott’s mum fell for the scenario. Scott hints this could become a recurring feature given how easily his mother is fooled, suggesting this marks the introduction of “Scott’s Gullible Mum” as a potential regular segment.
