28 June 2006: Jo Whiley Prank Call to Electrical Shop

Scott orchestrates an elaborate revenge prank on an electrical retailer that left listener Graham on hold for three weeks, impersonating Jo Whiley’s personal assistant and attempting to sell the shop 14 LCD screens.

Graham, a listener from Guildford, had ordered a faulty TV from an electrical shop and spent over three weeks trying to get it sorted. The shop repeatedly put him on hold, promised callbacks that never materialised, and left him in limbo despite multiple attempts to resolve the issue. To get revenge on Graham’s behalf, Scott devised a prank call pretending to be “Snowy Jones,” the personal assistant to “Casualty’s” Jo Whiley, claiming the broadcaster wanted to buy 14 large LCD screens for her house.

The prank escalated through a series of confusing transfers and fake characters. When Scott attempted to put the shop worker through to “Jo Whiley,” he transferred them to various people speaking in unclear accents and speaking what sounded like foreign languages, creating genuine confusion at the other end. The shop worker repeatedly struggled to understand who they were talking to, questioning whether it was Jo Whiley and eventually suggesting she was being rude. The bit continued with threats to transfer the worker to “Casualty’s husband” instead.

The prank mirrored the shop’s own frustrating behaviour by keeping the worker on hold and confused, though the show measured the time (eventually reaching over four minutes) as nothing compared to the three weeks Graham had wasted. It was a characteristically elaborate Mills wind-up designed to waste the shop’s time in exactly the way they’d wasted a customer’s.
