21 August 2006: The I Love You Game with a Twist

Scott plays a cunning version of the I Love You Game where a caller named Tom tries to get his sister-in-law Claire to say “I love you”—but Claire’s been primed in advance to flirt outrageously, leaving Tom convinced she’s genuinely coming on to him until the reveal.

The I Love You Game is a simple concept: call someone and try to get them to say “I love you” back, since it’s often just a reflexive response. Scott explains the rules to Tom, who wants to call his sister-in-law Claire. What Tom doesn’t know is that Scott’s team has already briefed Claire on what’s happening and asked her to play along by flirting heavily with him during the call.

When the call connects, Claire quickly pivots from normal small talk into suggestive comments and declarations of love, telling Tom “I love you” repeatedly and saying things like “I’ve just been thinking this for so long” and “I knew it between us.” Tom becomes increasingly flustered and confused, eventually reciprocating with “I love you, too,” seemingly convinced that his sister-in-law is genuinely making a pass at him.

The punchline lands when Scott reveals the setup: Claire was in on the joke the whole time, and she’d been told to wind Tom up. Tom’s reaction—a mixture of relief and embarrassment at having fallen for it—makes the bit work. It’s a classic radio moment where a trusted family member becomes the perfect accomplice for maximum awkwardness and a satisfying reveal.
