10 October 2006: Recruitment Agency Voicemail Payback

A recruitment consultant accidentally leaves his phone recording after hanging up, capturing him calling a job applicant a pervert—and Chappers rings him back to confront him with hilarious results.

James, who works at a girls’ school, received a voicemail from a recruitment agency offering job opportunities. The problem: the consultant never properly disconnected, and his entire follow-up conversation with a trainee remained on James’s answerphone. In it, he could be heard saying James “must be a bleeping pervert to work in a bleeping girl’s school” and discussing how to fill James’s current position once he left.

Scott and the team decided on payback. Chappers called the agency pretending to be James, and gradually cornered the consultant into admitting what he’d said. The consultant squirmed brilliantly, apologizing repeatedly and insisting it was “just a little joke in the office” with his trainee. Chappers kept pressing him—asking if the agency was trying to get him to leave so they could replace him with “another pervert”—until the consultant was thoroughly embarrassed and backtracking on every accusation. Despite the awkwardness, he remained polite and apologetic throughout, and Scott noted he was “a good sport” about the whole thing.

The episode also featured a successful “Getting Friends Back Together” feature where Beth called in asking Scott and Laura to reunite two friends, Simon and Andy, who’d fallen out over a girl weeks earlier. Despite technical difficulties with the phone lines, they managed to conference the two together, and by the end of the call they were making plans to meet up that weekend.
