18 October 2006: Laura’s Diary Final, American Names Game, and Hoffmania

The final season of Laura’s Diary concludes with a crisis: Laura discovers Ben calling out another girl’s name in his sleep, sparking relationship panic. The show also features ridiculous American phone book names and another round of the absurdist Hoffmania quiz.

Laura’s Diary reaches its conclusion with Mary reading an entry from 21st August 1998. Laura is in turmoil after hearing Ben call out “Charlotte” in his sleep—she suspects it might be Callum’s girlfriend but is torn between confronting him and avoiding an argument that could lead to another breakup. The diary entry captures her spiral of anxiety and paranoia, wondering if she’s good enough and whether she can cope with the uncertainty. Mary also reveals why she’s known as “Fox Mary”—because she wanted to be a fox as a child.

The American Name Game returns, with the team calling strangers from a US phone book early in the morning. Two particular calls stand out: “Randy Paul” and the extended struggle to confirm “Willie Muff”‘s name, which takes several frustrating attempts before the caller finally admits his surname is actually “Muff.”

Hoffmania, Scott’s quiz feature, runs throughout the show. David Hasselhoff (or a character playing him) hosts the game where callers must identify a mystery voice. Contestants include Leanne from Newcastle, Helena from Bridgewell (who claims to have met Hasselhoff as a baby in South Africa), and Tamid from South London—who correctly identifies the mystery voice and wins a copy of “David Hasselhoff Sings America.” The quiz is peppered with absurdist banter about the Hoff’s drinking habits and a recurring joke about “too much piano, greglio.”

The team also runs the Florist Game, testing what rude messages flower delivery companies will actually include on cards. Previous attempts (“I can’t believe you slept with him you dirty”) succeeded, but this episode they try an elaborate prank message pretending to be a bank robbery note—which the florist remarkably agrees to send.
