27 November 2006: Scott’s TV News Debut and Casualty Appearance

Scott Mills makes it onto the BBC News after helping cut Andy Murray’s hair for Children in Need, and reveals he’s also making his acting debut on Casualty — all in the same week.

The show opens with Scott reflecting on an extraordinary week. He’s just appeared on the BBC News as part of a Children in Need fundraising event where he (alongside Danny Howard) cut Andy Murray’s hair, raising over £10,000. Scott plays back the actual news bulletin, where the reporter describes Murray’s “unruly mop” being tamed and reads a script full of hair-related puns (“locks,” “tamed,” etc.), with Scott’s voice audible in the background asking Murray about being a tennis player.

Scott is delighted to have made it into the tabloid sports pages and points out that at the start of the year he never would have believed three things would happen: Laura releasing a book, him appearing in sports pages, and him making his acting debut on Casualty. That debut airs the following night on BBC One. Scott warns listeners to watch for the moment when they see “nurses in wet t-shirts” — that’s his cue. He then plays back audio from the Casualty set, where he appears to be playing a hospital visitor or patient asking nurses about the emergency department closing and patients having to travel to Chipping Marsh instead.

Scott describes the shoot taking place on one of the hottest days of the year (June or July) but having to pretend it was November, with extras in coats boiling in the heat. He was dressed in what he calls a “nasty geography teacher tweed jacket.” The segment includes a rambling phone call from a listener named Sarah about her great-grandmother’s ability to put her leg behind her head as a party trick.
