15 January 2007: Scott’s Teenage Radio Archives and Early Interviews

Scott digs into his own embarrassing archive from his Power FM days at 16, playing back cringeworthy recordings of himself as a young music journalist interviewing a hopeful pop singer named Steve Paris.

In a playful ambush that Scott initially protests against, the show revisits recordings from Scott’s time on Power FM when he was a teenager. A colleague plays back clips from “Incession,” a feature Scott presented where he interviewed up-and-coming musicians. The featured interview is with Steve Paris, a 21-year-old aspiring pop singer who’d already secured a record deal with EMI at 17.

The clips reveal Scott at his most earnestly enthusiastic and occasionally clueless as a young interviewer. His voice noticeably hasn’t fully broken in some moments, and his questions veer from the genuinely probing (“Would you know when to give up?”) to the bewilderingly vague. There’s particular comedy mileage in Scott’s own shocked reaction when Steve casually mentions his EMI deal—a moment of youthful naïveté that clearly amuses the grown-up version of Scott now. Scott reflects on being 16, finding himself, and admits he didn’t really know what he was talking about at the time, despite his confident presenter demeanor. The whole sequence captures that particular cringe-gold of early radio ambition meeting teenage certainty.
