27 February 2007: Fraser’s Surprise Return to Stand-Up Comedy

Scott discovers his flatmate Fraser, drunk from a day in the pub, has called into Radio 1’s Surgery and is now being lined up for an impromptu gig at the Comedy Store that very evening — much to Scott’s horror.

While driving home from holiday, Scott tuned into Radio 1’s Surgery (featuring Dr Mark and guest Ed Burns discussing stress) and was stunned to hear his flatmate Fraser, worse for wear after several drinks, calling in from a pub. Fraser had apparently texted the show, been called back, and found himself on air doing his stand-up material to a national audience.

This is a callback to two years earlier when Fraser had briefly attempted comedy but quit because he found it too hard — audiences didn’t always laugh. Scott is appalled to discover Fraser is now considering a comeback, especially after hearing some of his material on air, which includes a poorly-executed joke about a girl who carried “extra baggage” and her friends hanging around her to “look better.” Even as Fraser stumbles through the punchline on live radio, Scott is exasperated.

Things escalate when Alex from the Comedy Store calls the show. He’s willing to let Fraser perform at the venue’s “King Gong” night — an open-mic slot where audience members get five minutes to test material, with the crowd deciding if they’re any good. Scott, seeing an opportunity, convinces Alex to put Fraser on that very evening. When Scott calls Fraser back to tell him the news, Fraser is hungover and has no memory of calling the show or his material. Scott plays back the fat-girl joke, which Fraser doesn’t even remember telling. Despite Scott’s urgent plea not to do fat jokes, Fraser agrees to give it a go, convinced he might actually be good at it this time — a prospect that leaves Scott deeply pessimistic about the evening ahead.
