17 January 2008: Paul McKenna’s Hypnosis Help and Craig David’s Romantic Tactics

Hypnotist Paul McKenna visits the studio to offer advice on everything from helping Laura con her boyfriend into marriage to overcoming fear of flying, while Scott’s investigation into Craig David’s romantic methods reveals the star uses singing oompa loompa telegrams to woo women.

The show opens with breaking Craig David news replacing the now-exhausted Breaking Britney Spears segment. Scott reveals his exclusive scoop: Craig David wooed a mystery woman by sending a singing oompa loompa telegram round to her mum’s house—a romantic tactic inspired by his love of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Later, listeners call in with relationship troubles. Victoria from Sheffield has a boyfriend, Darren, who forgot his girlfriend Rebecca’s birthday. Scott and the team leave voicemail messages on Rebecca’s phone as attempted damage control, with messages from Scott, Laura, and a rather breathy attempt at “Happy Birthday” before playing Wham to celebrate. The tone is lighthearted but the effort is acknowledged to be “lame” compared to Craig David’s standards.

Paul McKenna arrives as the main guest and discusses his career shift away from stage hypnosis toward self-help work. He shares anecdotes including hypnotizing Richard Hammond to forget how to drive (viewable on YouTube) and doing mental support work for David Walliams during his Channel swim, helping him distort time perception to make the ten-hour swim feel shorter. Laura asks McKenna if he can use his hypnotic powers to convince her boyfriend James to marry her, but McKenna admits he’s “the most rubbish person” at relationships and suggests understanding whether James is visually, auditorily, or kinesthetically oriented—noting he prefers visual gifts. McKenna also discusses his newly updated book on weight loss, which he says has become number one on the charts, and offers to help Scott with his fear of flying, which he experiences during turbulence.
