4 February 2008: The Hoola Chair and Upstaged Contestants

Scott discovers a ridiculous home fitness invention that’s somehow worse at being discreet than it sounds, and previews early contestants for his new BBC Three talent show Upstaged, including a five-piece girl band called The Electric Dolls performing their track “Baps Are Baking.”

The show opens with more messages from the Flirt Divert answer phone feature, including memorable callers like Keith Baker (“video maker”) offering to “get plugged in” and meet up again, and Banzer inviting someone out again because his nan’s in town and they could use the shallow (presumably sofa or similar). Scott uses the phone number 0707-774-914 for listeners wanting to use Flirt Divert over the weekend.

The main event is Scott’s discovery of The Hoola Chair (marketed as the “Hawaii Chair”), a motor-driven exercise device that uses a 2,800 RPM hula motion to vibrate your hips while you sit. The marketing promises it works while you watch TV, work, use the computer, or spend time with family — claims Scott and his team hilariously dismantle, noting it’s decidedly *not* discreet for any of those scenarios. The chair has two speeds and can support up to 300 pounds. Scott mentions that Louise from the show found her mum had invested in one, put it on the top level, and broke it — and that Katie and Peter Andre both tried one on their show.

The episode also previews Scott’s new BBC Three talent show, Upstaged, where contestants submit videos of their talents online at bbc.co.uk/upstaged. Winners get to perform in a box for six hours, judged by online voters. Scott plays clips from early contenders: Dennis the Russian, who wants to make a cooking and travel show; Ian Luellen Row, an 18-year-old aspiring comedian with a donkey; and The Electric Dolls, a five-piece girl band in suspenders performing “Baps Are Baking.” Scott declares The Electric Dolls his clear favourite by a significant margin.
