27 May 2008: Tom from Come Dine With Me and Serbian Phrases for Eurovision

Scott speaks to Tom, the star of the previous night’s Come Dine With Me, who worried he’d come across badly on camera — and then Chappers quizzes him on Serbian phrases ahead of Scott’s Eurovision trip, plus another round of Barryoke.

Tom was the guest on Come Dine With Me the night before, and Scott catches up with him about his performance. Tom had been anxious about how much wine he’d drunk and whether he’d seemed like a tool, but the listeners’ texts suggest he came across well overall. They chat about some of the show’s standout moments: Tom eating dried chillies (which made him cry), his pedantic approach to the cheese board without salt and pepper on the table, and his slightly unconventional wine-opening technique using a gadget rather than a proper corkscrew. Tom agrees his nerves did make him sound a bit pompous at the start, but felt he warmed up as the evening went on.

In the second half, Chappers tests Scott’s knowledge of Serbian phrases ahead of his upcoming Eurovision Song Contest trip. Scott is given eight phrases recorded by a native Serbian speaker and must decide whether each one sounds friendly or threatening. The phrases include “Would you like me to dance for you?” (which Scott correctly identifies as nice), “Are you OK sharing a bed tonight?” (from a two-star hotel), and one genuinely alarming option: “Is it OK if I cut your head off with a rusty bread knife?” Scott does remarkably well at the game, correctly identifying most of the threatening vs. friendly phrases.

The show wraps with another Barryoke segment — “Voulez vous coucher avec Barry?” — where listener Barry from Kendal gets a karaoke-style introduction.
