22 December 2009: David Gest on Come Dine with Me, Michael Jackson’s jokes and learning to moonwalk

David Gest

David Gest joined Scott ahead of appearing on a celebrity edition of Come Dine with Me.

He said Sherrie Hewson was appearing with him and described her as completely crazy.

Gest claimed he had become a better cook after learning from his cousin Rita from childhood onwards. He then launched into an intentionally outrageous song about Rita leaving teaching and becoming a prostitute.

The studio repeatedly tried to control the material as Gest added further risqué family stories, including one about a cousin whose name, occupation and death created a sequence of accidental innuendoes.

Scott apologised to listeners and tried to move the conversation back towards Christmas.

The Michael Jackson séance programme

Gest discussed the television programme in which Derek Acorah attempted to contact Michael Jackson.

He had hosted with June Sarpong and said both of them had struggled not to laugh when Acorah announced that he had made contact.

Gest said one of the moments that particularly amused him was Acorah claiming to pass on a greeting to Quincy Jones, because Jackson and Jones had not been especially close towards the end.

Scott questioned whether it felt uncomfortable to laugh during a programme about somebody Gest had known personally.

Gest replied that Jackson had possessed a strong sense of humour and would have found the absurdity funny.

Michael Jackson’s practical jokes

Gest described the private Jackson as sharp, funny and fond of elaborate practical jokes.

They would enter antique shops and ask whether the dealer had any works by a completely invented artist. When the dealer pretended to recognise the name and claimed to have just sold one for a huge amount, Jackson would act disappointed and promise never to use that dealer again.

Jackson also made prank calls to strangers.

He would ask for somebody named Rachel, insist that the recipient was really Rachel, tell her to inform the children he would be home soon, hang up and then call again to continue the joke.

Gest said this private personality differed greatly from the reserved public image people usually saw.

Learning the moonwalk

Gest remembered watching Captain EO with Jackson at Disneyland and telling him after the moonwalk sequence that he was “really good”.

Jackson replied that Gest was only just figuring that out.

Later, back at Gest’s home in Palm Springs, Jackson tried to teach him the moonwalk in the kitchen while Gest was cooking pasta.

Gest attempted the move, fell into the pasta and abandoned the lesson.

They then went to Denny’s for a cheap meal, where members of the public approached Jackson while the pair continued joking together.
