16 July 2014: Rixton reveal the strangest relationship deal-breakers

Cheryl’s surname is finally corrected

Scott and Chris repaired their earlier attempt at Cheryl Cole’s married name. She had become Cheryl Fernandez-Versini, not “Cheryl Bernard”, although the correct version still demanded more concentration than either presenter expected from a pop-news item.

Unlucky Gary rejects a Lion King novice

Chris’s friend Unlucky Gary had stopped seeing somebody because she had never watched The Lion King and pronounced “garage” in a way he disliked. Scott played Mufasa’s death scene, causing listeners to report that they were crying at work and in cars.

The incident raised a wider question: which small habits, cultural omissions or physical details could end an otherwise promising relationship?

Rixton inspect the feet

Rixton were approaching a possible number one with “Me and My Broken Heart”. Their American success had already taken them to Ellen, drinks with Psy and a game of Mafia with Tom Hanks, but they said the band still had very little money. If the single reached the top, they considered tattoos and a jump into the fountain at Watford’s shopping centre.

The band then supplied its own deal-breakers. Feet mattered: cracked heels, webbed toes or poorly maintained nails could cause immediate concern, prompting the phrase “look at the feet on that”. A lack of enthusiasm for reality television could be equally serious.

Listeners contributed partners who would not acknowledge a beloved dog, people who used a supermarket carrier bag as overnight luggage and somebody dumped for cheating in a girlfriend’s dream. That final victim acquired the nickname Dreamboat despite having done nothing outside the dream.

The overnight-pants dispute

Scott said a spontaneous overnight stay still required clean underwear, a toothbrush and a fresh T-shirt. Chris considered bringing spare pants to a bar much stranger than simply wearing the same pair the next morning.

Both approaches carried social risk. A carrier bag looked unprepared, a packed bag looked overconfident and no bag at all meant defending yesterday’s underwear over breakfast.

Alice Levine drinks something green

Alice Levine arrived with a juice containing kale, banana, strawberries and almonds. It made her feel slightly sick, but she believed it was also making her glow.

She won Real or No Real 30–20, proving that an alarming drink could coexist with sound judgement. The programme ended by announcing Rachel Riley and Rhianna Dhillon for the next day’s Innuendo Bingo, while Rixton left to continue their pursuit of a number one and acceptable feet.
