One morning on Breakfast
Scott and Chris covered the Radio 1 Breakfast Show for a single Friday while Nick Grimshaw filmed another project. The podcast arrived early under the name John Barrowman Daily, continuing the habit of assigning it to an unrelated celebrity.
The previous night’s trip to Fifty Shades of Grey was still fresh enough for Scott to mention it to almost every guest. Matt Edmondson would take the afternoon programme, allowing Scott and Chris to leave after a show which felt considerably longer than an ordinary Friday.
Rita Ora from Los Angeles
Rita Ora joined from Los Angeles while trying on dresses for the Oscars. She had worked through about 20 options and compared the experience with becoming a princess, although alterations were still required before the final choice.
She was pleased to have finished the blind-audition stage of The Voice, where the final available spaces made every decision more competitive. Rita wanted to return for another series and looked forward to the point where viewers learned more about the singers rather than simply watching chairs turn.
Scott had seen her brief appearance as Mia Grey in Fifty Shades. Rita pointed out that readers of the novel should not have expected a large role, but hoped the character could develop in later films. Scott had nevertheless become excited when her name appeared in the opening credits.
Ant and Dec’s busy week
Ant and Dec arrived before the return of Saturday Night Takeaway and their second stint hosting the Brit Awards. The first Takeaway would end with a Royal Marines band after months of rehearsals, including Dec learning trombone. Scott offered his abandoned ambition to play the harp but received little encouragement.
They described undercover items involving Olly Murs in a leotard inside a fake 3D body scanner and Cheryl Fernandez-Versini confusing estate agents while pretending to sell a house. The set-ups required elaborate planning and prosthetics, but only Jill Halfpenny had recognised them immediately during years of filming.
The pair had hosted the Brits 14 years earlier and remembered being too nervous to enjoy it. This time they intended to relax, move through the audience and celebrate a strong year for British solo artists. Madonna’s appearance made the closing performance particularly significant.
Happy Hardcore FM
Scott introduced Ant and Dec to Happy Hardcore FM, a feature created during Happiness Week which combined accelerated music, shouting callers and very little restraint. The presenters joined in immediately and turned the Breakfast studio into a Friday-morning rave.
Later, EastEnders actor Jake Wood discussed the ambitious live anniversary episodes and the reveal of Lucy Beale’s killer. The production had filmed multiple possible outcomes and kept the secret even from parts of the cast, making the live aftermath an unusually large risk.
Scott and Chris ended the Breakfast cover tired but safely back in familiar territory. They would return to afternoons on Monday, when the recordings from their cinema trip with Vanessa Feltz could finally be played in full.
