29 June 2015: A listener cancels her date after not washing for Glastonbury

Glastonbury’s Monday morning

Scott and Chris covered Breakfast while Nick Grimshaw recovered from Glastonbury. They reviewed Kanye West’s headline set, Lee Nelson’s stage invasion, Lionel Richie, Mark Ronson and the enormous selection of complete performances already available on BBC iPlayer.

Scott thought Kanye’s opening was strong but the middle lost momentum. Social media had supplied alternative entertainment through subtitles, Eamonn Holmes comparisons and Jedward reminding everybody that their own stage invasion had involved a pineapple.

The programme’s waking-up song helped teachers, pupils and people returning to work after large weekends. Listeners chose messages from Five Seconds of Summer, Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift, allowing celebrity voices to perform the alarm-clock duties.

Who did not wash?

Friday’s DontWashForGlastonbury challenge produced genuine consequences. Chris had still not showered on Monday morning and believed wet wipes had kept the situation manageable. Scott had abandoned his own attempt on Sunday after a roast-beef lunch left him unable to tell whether the lingering smell came from the meal or himself.

Listener Hazel completed the challenge but cancelled a date because she did not want the man to encounter her after two days without washing. By Monday she had showered and regretted only the missed meeting, not her commitment to Radio 1.

Mark had already been camping with schoolchildren since Wednesday when he heard the challenge and extended the experiment until Sunday. Even after a bath and shower he still felt itchy. Scott was impressed that people had followed advice he had never expected anybody to treat seriously.

Judy Murray at Wimbledon

On the first morning of Wimbledon, Judy Murray called from an empty Court Four. Andy had already won 41 matches during 2015, taken two clay-court titles and beaten Rafael Nadal before winning at Queen’s, leaving her confident that he had prepared as well as possible.

Judy was relaxed because neither of her sons played that day. She planned to watch Heather Watson and Johanna Konta, then promised to visit Scott and Chris when they broadcast from the men’s semi-finals the following Friday.

Animal tennis

Scott asked Judy to choose an animal tennis match. She selected a deer against a fox and listened as their noises were edited into a rally.

Judy thought the sounds were remarkably similar to players she had heard around the circuit and identified the deer with Victoria Azarenka. Scott suggested reviving their Strictly Come Dancing “crap dancing club” when she visited, although Judy was much more enthusiastic about taking Anton Du Beke to the Royal Box.

The tennis theme continued when a listener working with horses reported that one animal was answering the programme’s recorded horse. Scott could not translate the conversation but decided it was probably saying “yes”, extending the show’s language into another species.
