17 July 2015: 5 Seconds of Summer unveil She’s Kinda Hot

Waiting for the new song

5 Seconds of Summer fans joined the show from Britain and around the world ahead of the first Radio 1 play of She’s Kinda Hot. One pair baked chocolate cookies to control their excitement. Two others pulled off the road because they did not trust themselves to drive while listening to the interview.

The volume of capital letters and impatient messages increased as the scheduled time approached. Scott reassured regular listeners that the programme was always this exciting, then called the band in Los Angeles.

5 Seconds of Summer in Los Angeles

Scott first checked on Michael Clifford after a pyrotechnic accident earlier in the tour. The stage flames had been removed, prompting suggestions of digital fires, bubbles or foam as safer replacements. Luke Hemmings and Ashton Irwin discussed recent birthdays, while the group explained how difficult it had been to keep quiet about music they had spent months making.

They described She’s Kinda Hot as deliberately different from their previous singles. Introducing it proved harder than writing it: the band attempted serious, Australian and increasingly exaggerated Radio 1 announcements before producing a usable version.

After the premiere, the conversation covered relatives appearing on stage, touring money, relationships and the band’s request for help creating a dating advertisement. Their least demanding version asked for anybody with a heartbeat.

Falling for the personal trainer

The show returned to its discussion of attractive personal trainers. Brad joined a gym while in a three-year relationship, became close to his trainer and eventually left his girlfriend to be with her. Months later, he and the trainer were still together, proving that his former partner had possessed exactly the reason for concern that everybody denied at the time.

Abby supplied the opposite outcome. She chose the trainer she fancied, arranged quiet afternoon sessions and enjoyed the motivation until he mentioned a three-week holiday to Florida with his girlfriend. Her interest in both him and the gym vanished, and she directed her cancellation letter to another member of staff to avoid speaking to him again.

Chris, whose girlfriend was considering a trainer, found neither story reassuring. He resolved to research the available candidates himself.

A 20-second hug

Clara Amfo played Real or No Real. The claim that hugging somebody for 20 seconds could increase trust was real, with the effect linked to increased oxytocin. Scott and Clara tested it while Chris timed them and discovered that 20 seconds felt extremely long on live radio.

Clara won after further facts about Louis Walsh and Rihanna merchandise. Scott then announced that he was leaving for two weeks. The farewell explains why the July archive ends on the 17th and resumes with his return on 3 August.
