Keeping the line-up secret
Scott began the Breakfast Show knowing the complete main-stage line-up for Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Exeter. He had to protect it until 08:00 while listeners searched for clues in every song he played. A specially produced mash-up then placed every artist into one continuous track and invited the audience to identify them before the names were confirmed.
Saturday’s line-up was Nick Jonas, Tom Odell, Sigma, Meghan Trainor, Jess Glynne, Bastille, Jake Bugg, Chase & Status and Mumford & Sons. Sunday brought OneRepublic, Years & Years, The 1975, Kygo, Iggy Azalea, Ellie Goulding, Catfish and the Bottlemen, The Weeknd and Coldplay.
Promises for Exeter
Nick Jonas would open Saturday’s main stage and attempted Scott’s version of the Exeter accent. Marcus Mumford confirmed that Mumford & Sons would close the day with a flexible live set, but asked for football backstage. Scott promised to arrange a match and recruit Jake Bugg, despite having no authority over either player’s schedule.
OneRepublic would open Sunday. Ryan Tedder discussed disguising famous contacts in his phone after losing it in a Paris taxi, turning initials such as R&B into Reggie ’N’ Bollie. Because he wrote some of his best songs in the shower, Scott also promised him a waterproof notebook.
Olly Alexander joined to confirm Years & Years, while the other interviews introduced Catfish and the Bottlemen and Iggy Azalea. Emeli Sandé then revealed Biffy Clyro would close Sunday’s In New Music We Trust stage, ahead of her full line-up programme that evening.
The world’s angriest waitress
Before the announcement, Scott found footage of a Chicago waitress aggressively serving a polite family. Her abrupt questions and lack of patience made the exchange sound hostile, but the restaurant deliberately employed rude staff as part of the experience.
The clip provided a suitably loud start to a programme already carrying the pressure of a major announcement and two weeks of Breakfast cover.
