29 January 2025: Ask Tina anything, Watford mysteries and the easiest quiz

Taking your own mug out of the house

On his third morning as host, Scott asked listeners to normalise carrying an ordinary household mug of tea or coffee outside. He had taken one from the house to the car at five o’clock and felt people looked at him “like you’ve just done a crime”, despite takeaway cups attracting no attention.

Listeners quickly confirmed he was not alone. Rachel in Blackpool said 18 missing mugs had recently been discovered in her husband’s car, while others reported taking mugs to work, the car and even out to feed horses.

Ask Tina anything

A listener returned to Tina Daheley’s launch-day revelation that she puts mayonnaise in a bacon sandwich. Scott replayed her full icebreaker, which also included a fear of cruises and scrunched-up tissues, playing trombone, country dancing, calligraphy, degrees in law and computer science, working on Space Cadets and once waking at 6.21 before reading the 6.30 news.

That prompted an impromptu Ask Tina Anything. She explained she chose trombone because the saxophone waiting list at school was too long and said law had felt boring to her, while apologising to lawyers.

Tina preferred bacon between crispy and soggy, always separated KitKat fingers and could not choose a single favourite song. Asked whether she would stay loyal if another station tried to poach her, she replied: “Of course I would.”

More of her employment history emerged when she confirmed she had worked as a junior in a hairdresser’s and washed Kylie Minogue’s hair. “She tips really well,” Tina recalled. Her preferred meal deal was a ham and cheese sandwich, orange juice and salt and vinegar crisps.

One listener attempted to use Tina’s legal background to seek advice about indemnity insurance on a freehold property. Scott immediately intervened: “Don’t be ridiculous. This is the BBC. Tina cannot answer that.”

Good Morning Minute

Scott continued developing the audience roll call by asking for a name, location and one exact detail from the morning. The responses included Lydia in Romford setting up a market stall without a coat, Mike in Rochdale dropping toast on the floor and a family travelling to Gatwick for a wedding in Barcelona.

Other messages included someone apparently making the bed naked in Cardiff and Maria in St Albans heading to a Bridgerton-themed afternoon tea. Confusion over the phrase “petit fours” became one of the minute’s small running jokes.

Unexpected legend in bagging area

Ellie introduced Heav from Primark at Bluewater, whose self-checkout announcements included: “Unexpected legend in bagging area. Unexpected legend: me.” Another clip summed up the morning as: “Today’s vibe: tired. Today’s vibe: exhausted. Today’s vibe: I want to go home.”

Scott immediately followed the account and described Heav as “an icon”. The phrase continued to recur through the programme.

The Easiest Quiz

Claire from Bristol wanted to appear on a quiz before turning 50 and expected her teenagers Daisy and Zach to be mortified. She worked part-time in a primary school and hoped to beat Christian’s score of 35.

Scott told her: “It’s me and you against the quiz. I will always stand up for you.” Claire moved through questions including Peggy Mitchell’s catchphrase and Lord Sugar’s “You’re fired”.

She survived a brief dispute after answering “dollars” as the currency of the United States, but her run ended when she answered “milk” to “What do cows drink?” She finished with 16 and said she would try The 1% Club next.

Lord Sugar watches EastEnders

Claire’s Lord Sugar impression led Scott to reveal that the Apprentice host regularly posts his thoughts on EastEnders. Scott read his complaint that the Bianca storyline was “getting a bit silly now” and imagined him watching on an enormous television.

Watford and the places people keep returning to

Scott became increasingly suspicious of Sam’s repeated trips to Watford. Sam appeared to visit at least three times a week, often saying he needed the Post Office or had clothes to return. When asked what else he planned to do there, he admitted: “I don’t know.”

The subject expanded into places listeners would travel long distances to revisit. Josh called from Doncaster to explain why he travelled to a fish-and-chip shop in Selby, saying it was the only place he had found that served battered tripe and that he would willingly drive an hour.

Other examples included Trago Mills in Liskeard, a chip shop in Anstruther, an independent bookshop in Bath and a Victoria sponge transported hundreds of miles back to Bridgend.

Calling Trevor Nelson

Scott phoned Trevor shortly before the third edition of his new afternoon show. Trevor’s voicemail said he was probably still in bed and reminded callers: “Don’t call me before 12.” Scott decided not to leave a message.

The Birthday Game

Eleanor from Sheffield turned 39 and hoped for 1990s music, boy bands or cheese. Her three options were Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s Relax, Lady Gaga’s Just Dance and Celine Dion’s Think Twice.

She skipped the first two and was pleased with Celine because her friend Emma had sung it at a karaoke birthday the previous year. Scott attempted to sing along and immediately admitted: “If I could have my time again, I wouldn’t have done that.”

29 January 2025: Vernon Kay

Vernon called the programme “a cracking show” before the conversation returned to Sam’s Watford obsession. He suggested Sam might be involved in an Anthony Joshua tour, prompting Scott initially to think of AJ Pritchard.

They discussed Watford FC and the possibility of open-top bus tours. Vernon suggested recreating the Titanic scene, but Scott pointed out that he had already done it with Linda from The Traitors.
