23 May 2025: Jessie J meets Lesley Joseph

Two different Essex icons

Scott introduced Big Guest Friday by noting that both guests came from Essex but represented very different corners of entertainment.

Jessie J was described as one of the strongest singers to emerge from Ilford, while Lesley Joseph remained inseparable from Dorien Green, the “man-eater of Chigwell” from Birds of a Feather.

Jessie J

Jessie J joined Scott to discuss returning with new music after a period in which health, family and personal priorities had changed the pace of her career.

She talked about the pressure attached to a voice known for large live performances and the work required to keep that voice healthy.

The conversation revisited early songs including Price Tag, Domino and Bang Bang, and the speed with which international success arrived.

Jessie reflected on becoming a mother and how that experience altered what she wanted to write about and how much time she was willing to spend away.

Scott asked about the difference between demonstrating vocal ability and using the voice to tell a story, with Jessie stressing that technical power mattered only if the emotion remained clear.

She stayed involved as Lesley Joseph arrived, allowing two very different performers to compare Essex, stage confidence and the strange things strangers shouted at them.

Lesley Joseph

Lesley Joseph joined Scott to discuss her continuing career in theatre and television and the enduring popularity of Birds of a Feather.

She reflected on Dorien’s clothes, confidence and appetite for attention, explaining why the character remained memorable long after the original series.

The conversation covered working with Pauline Quirke and Linda Robson and the chemistry required to make the central friendship believable.

Lesley discussed stage work and the stamina demanded by touring productions, rejecting any assumption that age had reduced her appetite for performing.

Scott played on the contrast between Dorien and Jessie’s pop-star image, while both guests found common ground in performance, discipline and Essex roots.

Lesley also joined the musical material, including references to songs associated with Dorien and Birds of a Feather.

The Wonder Years

The Wonder Years completed the long weekend edition with music from consecutive years and listener memories.
