Scott Mills closes 2025 with heartfelt New Year message on Radio 2

Scott Mills signed off his final breakfast show of 2025 with a warm and reflective New Year message, thanking listeners for their support during his first year hosting breakfast on BBC Radio 2.

Speaking at the end of the programme, Mills described the role as “the show and the job that I have always wanted to do,” admitting that even now he sometimes still can’t quite believe it happened. Calling it “the biggest job in UK radio,” he acknowledged the pressure that comes with leading Radio 2’s flagship show, and the reality that change brings scrutiny as well as excitement.

Central to his message was gratitude to the listeners, affectionately known as the Faithfuls, who have joined him each morning throughout 2025. Mills reflected on how important it has been to have that support while the show found its rhythm, especially during a year of transition.

He thanked everyone who had played along with the show, from taking part in quizzes and the Birthday Game, to sending in stories and voice notes, or coming along to outside broadcasts and live events. Mills name-checked moments from across the UK, including Scarborough, Belfast, Glasgow and Chelmsford, as well as Radio 2 in the Park, while also recognising those who simply tune in for a few minutes each morning before work, the school run, or the shower.

“It is a privilege to share your morning with you,” he told listeners, as he looked ahead to the year to come.

Mills was keen to stress that the show is a team effort, praising everyone behind the scenes for their passion and commitment. He said the programme is far more than “just a job” to the people who make it, crediting them with putting their lives into the show every day. He also thanked his family, friends, colleagues at Radio 2, and his partner Sam for the support that has helped make the year possible.

Ending on a wider reflection about the power of radio, Mills reminded listeners why the medium still matters. While it may be “just voices coming out of the speaker,” he said, Radio 2 is often people’s company through difficult mornings and tough times, offering light relief and a laugh when the wider news feels bleak.

As he closed his final show of 2025, Mills left the Faithfuls with a simple message of appreciation and optimism for the year ahead: Radio 2 will always be there.
