14 August 2006: Laura Becomes a Bathroom Valet in a Dingy Pub

Laura ventures into a run-down pub toilet to pose as a bathroom valet, armed with styling products and deodorant, to see if she can make money from unsuspecting punters in one of the least glamorous locations possible.

The show opens with Scott explaining the bathroom valet phenomenon sweeping UK pubs and clubs — attendants who offer towels, cologne sprays, and soap in exchange for tips. Inspired by stories of drunk guests handing over substantial cash, the team decides to test whether this can work in a decidedly unglamorous setting.

Laura is dispatched to a traditional, working-men’s-style pub toilet that she immediately describes as “disgusting.” The décor includes rhinos on the wall, stones in the urinals (which Laura mistakes for ice cubes), and floors she’d rather not examine too closely. She sets up her makeshift beauty station with an array of products: deodorant, hair spray, Old Spice aftershave, hair gel, styling gum, a sanitary towel, and a lollipop, arranging them around one of the sinks with a tin for tips.

When customers arrive, the results are mixed. The first visitor accepts a spray of deodorant without complaint, though he won’t let Laura see him while he’s using the urinal. The second customer is distinctly unimpressed and dismissive of her attempts to offer products, believing she’s “stupid” and rejecting her services entirely. No money changes hands in either encounter.

Scott and the team cheer Laura’s efforts regardless, insisting her presence has genuinely elevated the pub’s bathroom experience. The feature works best as comedy because of the sheer incongruity — a professional bathroom valet service pitched to men who simply want to use the facilities in peace, in a pub that looks like it hasn’t seen a bottle of cologne in decades.
