5 April 2007: The Sunday Quiz Question That Nearly Broke Radio 1

A contestant struggles painfully—hilariously—to understand the simple concept of reverse trivia, taking nearly three minutes to grasp what question matches the answer “Sunday.”

Scott runs a reverse trivia quiz inspired by the American game show Jeopardy, where contestants are given the answer and must provide the corresponding question. When the answer is “Sunday,” the contestant initially can’t work out that the question should simply be “What day is Father’s Day?” What follows is an excruciatingly funny exchange where Scott patiently—and then with increasingly strained patience—tries to guide the contestant toward saying “What day is Father’s Day?” The contestant keeps offering variations like “Father’s Day is on Sunday” or just repeating “Sunday” back, missing the point that they need to frame it as an actual question. Scott walks them through the logic repeatedly: if the answer is “Sunday,” then the question must be something that yields Sunday as its answer. After nearly two and a half minutes of circular dialogue, the contestant finally gets it and delivers the correct question. It’s a brilliantly painful piece of radio that perfectly illustrates why this game format confuses people under pressure.
