19 April 2007: Castaway Prank Calls and Mouse Trap Minefield

Scott and the team pose as Castaway producers to interview the four Radio 1 listeners in the running to join the island, asking increasingly outlandish questions about nudity, romance, and crawling into a dead moose carcass — while Laura navigates a blindfolded mouse trap minefield in the studio.

As part of BBC Three’s Castaway competition, four Radio 1 listeners have made the final cut to potentially join the existing castaways on Great Barrier Island in New Zealand. Scott and his team decided to call the finalists pretending to be from the Castaway production office, with Scott as “Jeremy Pink” and Laura as “Beccy Thistle-Twatt,” to discover how far they’re willing to go for a spot on television.

Alex, the first finalist, says he’d be happy to go naked but refuses to cheat on his seven-year girlfriend. When asked about stirring up controversy, he agrees to mild sexism but draws the line at racism. Katrin from Wales is more adventurous — she’ll go topless and wouldn’t rule out kissing another contestant, particularly an islander named Alicester. She’s also enthusiastically willing to crawl inside a dead moose carcass.

Rabina, who’s looking for a man, proves willing to go topless and reveals she’d be open to “getting off” with a girl (given she has a boyfriend). When the notorious moose question arrives, she hilariously misinterprets it, declaring she’ll “make love” with Scott inside the carcass and tells him she loves him.

Lawrence, the fashion-obsessed finalist who can’t live without his hair tongs, never answered his phone during the calls, so the team couldn’t interview him.

Between the calls, Laura participates in a recurring stunt: blindfolded, she must navigate across the studio avoiding 18 mouse traps (the box promises they only “nip”). She successfully makes it through, though visibly nervous throughout.
