19 February 2008: Party Tricks, Kerry Katona and the Flirt Diverters

Scott embarks on a quest to acquire a party trick after feeling inadequate without one, leading to listener suggestions ranging from human bagpipes and duck sneezes to a deeply alarming eyeball-based noise trick. Meanwhile, Chappers gets uncomfortably flirty with clips from Kerry Katona’s new MTV reality show.

The show opens with discussion of Laura’s habit of calling Scott “Susan” before pivoting to Scott’s genuine desire to learn a party trick. Listeners send in suggestions: one caller demonstrates “human bagpipes” by manipulating vocal cords with a finger; another teaches a duck sneeze technique (involving breath control rather than actual sneezing); a third offers instruction in making farting sounds by placing one’s hand over the eye socket—a suggestion Scott wisely declines to attempt. None of these prove learnable or particularly appealing.

The team then tackles the ongoing mystery of the “flirt diverters”—callers ringing the show’s floor number to leave flirtatious messages. Previous episodes have seen people receive Valentine’s cards with the show’s number printed inside them. One caller leaves a rambling message that Scott struggles to parse, speculating whether it’s an attempt at Scottish rap or jungle-influenced enthusiasm.

The Kerry Katona segment dominates the second half. Laura’s been anticipating the launch of Katona’s MTV reality show “Kerry Katona: Crazy in Love,” and the team plays various clips that are meant to offer insight into her day-to-day life. Chappers creates an uncomfortably intimate parody in which Mark (presumably a producer) is imagined massaging Kerry’s feet while oils are involved—a sketch that makes Mark visibly uncomfortable and Scott openly disgusted. The clips themselves provide limited fascination, leaving the team divided on Katona’s appeal.

A lighter moment comes when Laura recounts a hairdresser story involving a woman who asked to have her hair styled to match her small dog’s appearance, then denied responsibility when the dog defecated on the salon floor.
