The Easiest Quiz: Ruth scores 21

Ruth from North Wales enjoyed salsa, craftwork, keeping fit and Nordic walking. Phil’s 30 remained the score to beat.

She moved through questions about pencil cases, King Kong, dogs, Olympic medals, dog breeds and metals. The quiz allowed several unusual pronunciations and continued to be unexpectedly generous.

The defining moment came when Scott asked, “What noise does a frog make?” Instead of “ribbit”, Ruth produced a deep, startling “down”-like sound that stopped the programme.

Scott asked her to repeat it, but Ruth told listeners they could rewind on BBC Sounds. The quiz accepted the answer and she continued.

Ruth eventually finished with 21 points. She also delivered a dramatic shout of “House!” that Scott compared with a bingo caller, giving her two of the week’s strongest audio moments.

Sixty years of The Sound of Music

The programme marked 60 years since The Sound of Music with a singalong Thursday built around its best-known songs.

Scott began by locating Diana, who was house-sitting high on a hill in Suffolk. The setting allowed the programme to recreate the opening image of the film before moving towards The Lonely Goatherd.

The show then found Sam in Switzerland, who was preparing to play a nun in a local York production of the musical. She had been practising while surrounded by the hills that inspired the film.

Scott persuaded her to perform part of the Latin chant from the show. She explained that the production would run from 29 April to 3 May at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre in York and that it would be her first time on stage.

Listeners joined in from cars and workplaces. One six-foot-four Yorkshireman admitted he was tapping his foot to the music, while another listener offered a beginner’s yodelling tip: repeat “older lady” faster and faster.

The Birthday Game: Norman

Norman had already celebrated with a tomahawk steak before joining the Birthday Game. His three selections included a Paul McCartney song whose lyrics named every day of the week except Saturday.

The feature became another excuse for Scott to return to the morning’s singalong mood before Friday’s birthday show.

27 March 2025: Vernon Kay

The handover reviewed Ruth’s frog noise, the Sound of Music singalong and Scott’s preparations for sharing his birthday with Ellie the following morning.
