Eurovision’s ultimate song

Scott revealed the result of Radio 2’s vote to find the ultimate Eurovision song of the 21st century, part of the station’s build-up to Basel.

The programme treated the countdown as a major Eurovision moment, with listeners reacting to the winning song and debating the entries that had missed out.

Scott also continued checking in on Remember Monday as preparations intensified for the UK’s performance.

The Easiest Quiz: Charity Shop Dawn scores 11

Dawn from Glossop managed a charity shop with 37 volunteers and was repeatedly compared with Charity Shop Sue. She said she loved Sue’s appearances because arguments over steamers, biscuits and staff behaviour were recognisable from her own working life.

Her daughter Mabel Rose, nearly 12, had persuaded her to apply after they played along every morning. Dawn answered questions about Scotland, hours in a day, Italy, squares, Neil Armstrong, haunted houses, Liverpool and Australia.

Asked what she had eaten for breakfast, Dawn admitted to a McDonald’s order involving a double-sausage muffin, extra cheese, two hash browns and a flat white, delivered by her boyfriend Damien.

The quiz became stuck on her answer “ramen” when asked to name something eaten with rice. Dawn argued that rice could be served in ramen and listed seaweed, egg and pork while Scott pleaded with the judges. The answer was eventually accepted.

Her run ended when she answered “jam” instead of marmalade as Paddington Bear’s favourite food. Dawn finished with 11 and said she had expected to perform better after playing at home.

Ellie Taylor

Ellie Taylor joined Scott at 8.30 with news that she was becoming part of the Radio 2 family.

The conversation covered her route through comedy, television and panel shows, including appearances on Strictly Come Dancing and The Great Pottery Throw Down.

Ellie discussed the difference between performing stand-up and presenting radio, where the relationship with listeners develops through repeated, ordinary moments rather than one concentrated show.

Scott asked what kind of programme she wanted to make and whether she had already begun planning music, features and the tone of the show.

The announcement was framed as a welcome rather than a conventional promotional interview, with Scott introducing Ellie as somebody listeners would now hear regularly on the station.

The Birthday Game: Louise turns 50

Louise from Hyde in Greater Manchester celebrated her 50th birthday and joined the Birthday Game after years of listening.

Her final selection was Take That’s Back for Good, number one in 1995. Listener Dan summarised the outcome as “Fortune favours the brave”, while William in Aberdeenshire praised the result in similar terms.

Scott played the song as the best possible conclusion to Louise’s three spins.

22 April 2025: Vernon Kay

The handover looked ahead to Jeff Goldblum’s live appearance and continued the debate over whether his surname rhymed with “room” or “mum”.
